I started my Youtube videos with "The Boss" by my favorite artist, Diana Ross. Frustrated with the lack of visuals on Miss Ross, I decided to create my own. This is dedicated to all the Diana fans who need a visual "fix". The single, as well as the album of the same name was released in 1979. Written and produced by Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, the album peaked at # 14 on the pop charts and # 10 on the R & B charts. The single peaked at # 19 on the pop charts and # 12 on the R & B charts. Diana sang the tune live on the Tonight Show, July 16th, 1979, where she was also the guest host, sang the tune at Macy's Thanksgiving parade, November 22nd, 1979 and live at Caesars, one of the few commercially released concerts. Long absent from her live shows until recent years, she now opens her 2010 More Today Than Yesterday" tour with the tune.
THE BOSS
LOVE HANGOVER
MORE TODAY THAN YESTERDAY
More Today Than Yesterday was originally sung by a "one hit wonder" group called Spiral Starecase. (and yes this is the correct spelling) Released in January of 1969, the song peaked on the Billboard charts at #12. The group never had another top 40 hit. The writer of the song as well as the lead vocal is Pat Upton. Check out his "fairly" recent rendition of his own song in the related video menu to the right.
Diana Ross included the tune on her 2006 studio Album "I Love You", and performed the song on American Idol as well as David Letterman, and The Actor's Studio, the latter being a spot on performance, sounding remarkably close to her recorded version. I've also posted this video in the related video section to the right. She has named her 2010 tour after the tune, and sings it right after her opening number, The Boss.
This is my tribute to Diana and this tour. Even at 66, nobody does it better !
